ITINERARY:

Day 1. Travel day from Athens Airport to Chania or Iraklion Airport. Taxi to the Nostos Hotel or the Porto Del Columbo Hotel in Chania.
Evening dinner & photo discussion.

Day 2. After breakfast at the hotel, we zig-zag through the northern foothills of the White Mountains, visiting the charming village of Laki. Afterwards we go to the Omalos Plateau and the top of the world famous Samaria Gorge. Pure and hard landscape. Stunningly wild and beautiful. Later, we see an old empty Turkish farmhouse and roadside chapel near Galatas village. Evening meal at the Turkish "Bigaza" Taverna in the village of Galatas. Good company and a photo discussion.

Day 3. The attractions of Old Chania Town. Venetian alleyways, Turkish mosques and minarets & the most photogenic harbour in Greece, dominated by the Lefki Ori. (White Mountains) Optional night photography. Weeks could be spend discovering its delights. Dinner in an old Turkish bathhouse, called Tamam. Or elsewhere around the harbour.

Day 4. First to an old Turkish fort overlooking Souda Bay and then visit the ancient site of Aptera (5th.Century BC). An old, fantastic Minoan tholos (grave) is the next stop, and then we have a coffee with Yiannis at Samonas village. Visit the archetypal fishing village of Almiritha for lunch and then we go along the green and fertile region of Apokoronas, with its many traditional villages, such as Exopolis, before returning to Chania for the evening meal.

Day 5. To Rethymnon. The old town huddles below the old Venetian Fortress, and through a maze of lanes, see Venetian stone houses with elaborate Turkish wooden balconies and the Italian Rimondi fountain. A small Venetian harbour and Turkish mosques, add to the gentle dignity of this charming town. Dinner in the harbour. (Optional night photography) Return to Chania late evening.

Day 6. The South Coast, via the plain of Askifou and the wild beauty of the landscape, to Chora Sfakion for lunch and a visit to the haunted hamlet of Aradena with its splendid 14th.Century Byzantine church. Depending on the ever changing ferry times to Loutro from Sfakia (Grecophiles know what I mean) the next stop could well be the mighty Venetian fortress at Frangokastello. We catch the ferry to Loutro, where we stay the night.

Day 7. Loutro. One of the most charming places on Crete, where there are no cars! Ancient settlements and wonderful views over the Libyan Sea make this small village, situated around the harbour, a peaceful haven from the 20th.Century. We leave late afternoon on the last ferry to Chora Sfakion, for some spectacular dusk shots of the village and mountains, before driving back to Chania for evening dinner.

Day 8. Free time for independent photography, shopping or relaxing. (You've been working hard, believe me!) Optional trips can be discussed.) In the evening, we gather for dinner at one of Chania's most popular restaurants.

Day 9.  Departure day to Athens Airport for your flight back to the U.S.A. Kalo Taxeethee! (Have a good journey)

Please note the above itinerary is subject to change, in the event of bad weather.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

Meals   Greek cuisine, Italian, Chinese and Vegetarian food is on offer to whet your appetite, and it' s great to unwind and socialize at the end of very satisfying photographic days. I should budget for around $30 per day to cover lunch and evening dinner including bar tab & soft drinks. Vegetarian (meatless) meals are normally available at most locations.

Digital   Memory Cards are available but expensive, so I advise bringing your own and downloading images to CDs here at a local Photo Store or to your
Laptop/Portable Device.

Processing Films  Full E.6, C.41 and Black & White processing facilities are available in Chania town. You can have colour prints back in around one hour, but slides are processed three or four times a week. The quality is good. I use two photo labs for all my stock photography.

Practical Information  Workshop participants will receive a memo suggesting reading recommendations and suggested film and photographic equipment. Wear sensible footwear as some walking is involved, and please also remember hats, sun oil and other similar items to ensure your personal comfort and protection from the elements.

Health Considerations  Some days you will be walking several miles, in the heat, and carrying an assortment of camera equipment. This is fine for people of average good health. And we have regular stops for coffee etc. Once you have forwarded the full fee or deposit and signed the reservation form, this will certify that he/she does not knowingly have any physical or other disability condition that could be a risk for himself / herself or another workshop participants.

Travel Insurance  Never travel without some kind of Insurance policy coverage, hopefully which you will never have to use. I strongly recommend you purchase some form of trip insurance.

Traveling to Crete  There are no direct flights from the U.S.A.
Workshop clients should make arrangements to fly
to Athens International Airport, where there are daily flights with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airways to Chania. Check with your travel agent for more details.

Responsibility  As I'm sure you can understand, I can accept no responsibility for losses & additional expenses due to a delay in air & other services, bad weather, strikes, sickness, or other causes. Any such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the workshop client. I reserve the right to substitute hotels of similar category should the need arise and make changes, if necessary, to the daily schedule. The workshop price does not include air transportation, passports, medical expenses, personal and baggage insurance, or expenses incurred due to events outside my control.
